Just Another Day in Transylvania…

If I told you that a random American-Israeli was walking through “Dracula’s Castle“, started talking to someone speaking Hebrew, and realized within three minutes that they knew someone in common and had in fact both attended the same wedding, would you react by…

1) Eating a bag of bamba?
2) Eating a bag of bissli?
3) Tweeting?
4) Saying “that’s Jewish geography for you”?

How does that stuff always happen?

“Threeee! Three falafel balls! NYA NYA NYA!”

Ask any Israeli who has travelled anywhere and it always happens. They not only attract the only Israelis around, but they also have people in common. That means…drum roll please…you’re Israeli!
(what kind of capcha is belfatar? Is that some kind of Transylvanian slang?)

I lived on a Kibbutz when I was 17. There was an Aussie girl on my program, and in 1995 I ran into her in Amsterdam.

I was at a concert in Atlanta in 2001 and I ran in an Israel girl who was one of my best friends on the kibbutz.

I was at a super bowl party this past February in Portland discovered that the guy I was talking to was at Hebrew U with me.

So… 4) Saying “That’s Jewish geography for you.”

A year ago I was stuck in an elevator in New Haven for approximately 25 minutes. I pressed the red “Emergency” button located on the elevator control panel. After a long wait, just like in the movies, guess who push with all his power the metallic door and came to save me? RIGHT! A hot Israeli guy who I met 4 years ago at a club in Tel Aviv. Good times!

All it means is that you travel in the same circles.

It must be related to our shared “na’aseh v’nishma” experience at Mt. Sinai.

Wow, great stories. Every time these things happen, it’s utterly crazy.

Someone should start http://www.jewishgeography.com where people can upload their stories. If someone runs with this, can I get it on it?

I had something like that happen to me, too, in March! The kids and I were staying at this small B&B in New Canaan, aka not-very-Jew-friendly WASP town in CT. I go down for breakfast at 6 am (the kids were at their grandparents) to eat before work. Usually, it would just have been me at that hour, but there was an older couple there, whispering so as not to be heard. However, since I have nutty-good hearing, I overhear them speaking in Hebrew, smile and say, "Boker Tov!" We all laughed and had breakfast together – in Hebrew.
