Actually, as an amateur gardener, the latter is pronounced “Hyoo-mys” frequently at gardening centers.
And, damn it, if I hear ONE MORE stupid American call chumus “huh-mus”, I’m going to scream. I’ve been corrected by counter-girls at my local falafel joint with as much experience with Middle Eastern food as the gas attendant does with oil refinery science.

And another thing: “Tahini” belongs in Tahiti. “Techinah,” on the other hand, belongs in Hertzliya.
Hold on a second… this is a source of confusion, and cookbooks and friends be damned, I still can’t get consensus.
Isn’t one the official “sauce”, whereas the other (as I was instructed, tahini) is the pure paste?

I believe the proper way to spell ḥumus is with a dot under the h.
